Canadians love to play! And you will find that families here put a strong emphasis on shared activities, with parents actively involved in the lives of children and youth. So whether scuba diving or swimming in the Pacific Ocean, snow boarding at Mt. Washington Alpine Resort, learning to golf at Pheasant Glen Golf Course, skating at Oceanside Place, swimming at Ravensong Aquatic Centre or exploring Horne Lake Caves, families learn, grow and have fun together in one of the most spectacular playgrounds in the world.

Arts & Culture

From the summer evening performances by the B2B Theatre Society to the year-round fun served up by ECHO Players at Qualicum Beach’s Village Theatre, residents and visitors to the Qualicum School district can choose from a variety of live theatre performances throughout the year. And, on occasion, they may even choose to get into the act themselves with stage workshops and clinics for everyone from preschoolers to seniors.
This area is home to a vibrant arts community, well known for its celebration of all things culture related. In Qualicum Beach The Old School House (TOSH) Arts Centre is the artistic focal point for these activities; while in Parksville, the Oceanside Community Arts Council’s goal is to promote accessibility to the arts through exhibitions, concerts, classes and workshops at the McMillan Arts Centre (the MAC).
Along with award-wining music programs at both our local high schools, we are fortunate to have a variety of opportunities for both taking part in music or sitting back to enjoy the talents of local, regional and international musicians who perform here. From fiddle playing and bluegrass, to concert choirs, salsa bands and bagpipes… music is in the air in Parksville-Qualicum Beach.
Festivals are a local specialty. The Show & Shine classic car show on Father’s Day each year attracts tens of thousands to the area, and visitors fill Parksville every summer for the annual Beach Festival and internationally recognized Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition. Crafts fairs, flea markets, the Brant Wildlife Festival, farmers markets, and the Fire & Ice street festival with it’s chili-making and ice sculpting contests, are a few of the many wonderful events to be enjoyed.
Hip hop, jazz, classical ballet, ballroom & salsa, highland dancing… all can be found in Oceanside. Take a class for fun & fitness, or to train for a future career in this most moving art form.

Sports & Recreation

Just an hour away from our region is Strathcona Provincial Park, a 250,000-hectare, mountain wilderness next door to Mt. Washington Alpine Resort. The resort offers downhill and cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails within an alpine village setting dotted with ski chalets, contemporary condominiums and hotels for those who’d like to stay the night. Local families create short winter holidays at the resort while a safe, convenient, “ski bus” service regularly shuttles snow-seekers up and down the mountain throughout the season.

Being on an island we are surrounded by water, so take advantage of our location and learn to kayak, sail, kiteboard, swim, scuba dive, canoe, or surf. Many outdoor activities here are centred on the ocean or one of the many nearby freshwater lakes and rivers. Try your hand at fly fishing, experience the thrill of landing a wild Pacific salmon, learn to waterski or wakeboard…. it’s water, water everywhere on Vancouver Island!

This community supports an active lifestyle including opportunities to take part in organized sports and teams. Hockey, baseball, soccer, football, basketball, rugby, lacrosse, volleyball… there’s something for all ages, and at all levels.
